What Are Maggots?
Flies lay their eggs in in rotting decaying matter. Like garbage dumps, the bottom of dumpsters, cow, dog, pig, poultry and humane manure, garbage piles or even decaying meat.These eggs hatch out in about 6-24 hours.
The maggot is what they are when they hatch.The maggot remains in the area for about 4-10 days. Feeding and growing. When it comes to getting a meal the maggot is disgusting. But it is also amazing.They are one of natures garbage disposals.They are oval shape creamy white little eaters. The pointy part is the maggots small head. A maggot has no teeth or jaws to chew with. They secrete a liquid that dissolves their food. Then they suck it up. On the other end of the body it has two tiny black spots. Thats how they breathe!
In about 4-10 days these little devils will crawl away from the breeding site to pupate. This is like a cacoon. It looks like a small brown bean. They stay inside this shelter for about 3-7 days. Then they emerge as adult Flies. Then the process starts all over. The adult female is ready to lay eggs in a few days. They live 30-60days.
How do you prevent maggots? Do not provide them with a place to breed. Keep all areas clean and dry.
